Stone gardens are really nice and decorative. If you like
art  this  might  be  for  you!  There  are  some  really  neat
stone  gardens  out  there  and  you  can  make  one  of  your
very  own!.  Stone  gardens  are  an  excellent choice  if  you don't have a lot of water. Stone gardens are a great way to keep down the weeds and can be very low maintenance. They also can be helpful when it comes time for the fire season. The stone won't feed the fire right to your front door. Under your stone, you might want to give some thought about laying down some weed protection. Landscape Fabric Weed Shield, is a 3mm thick black plastic. This will work great on the side of a hill but tends to hold water (such as when you have a heavy rainfall) because it does not let the water through.  Landscape

Fabrics are another option.  They are spun-bound polyester with added nylon and are durable and resist tearing. This one allows the water to run through but does not allow the weeds to grow through it. You can get both of these at your local hardware store.  Another option, instead of using Landscape Fabrics or even black plastic, is that you can recycle your old newspapers.  I really do suggest however, that you use a weed shield because otherwise the weeds will grow through the rocks.  Weed protection is simple to lay down. First pull as many weeds as you can out of the area you wish to protect. If you have any plants in this area you are going to want to cut your weed protection so it will fit around the plant. If you are placing your weed protection in a frame you will want to overlap your frame by at least 2" all the way around. When you have your weed protection in place you will want to slide the 2" overlap down into the soil next to the frame. A putty knife works well for this. Then place your rock over the top of your weed protection. That's all there is to it!

Rocks come in many different colors and sizes. By laying out different colors and/or sizes you can create a work of art. Rock gardens are an excellent choice for those hard to grow spots in your yard. You can always use planters or other decor to add to your garden.

A mixture of things you can use:

  •  Boulders
  •  Flagstone
  •  Gravel
  •  Old Lumber
  •  Pavers
  •  Railroad Ties
  •  Rocks
  • Sand

That will help set off your stone garden and make it more inviting.
